The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE Department) was established at Yarmouk University in the academic year 1983/1984 as part of the faculty of Engineering (FoE) and was moved in 1986 to the new campus which in-houses Jordan University of Science & Technology (JUST). The JUST campus has mainly faculties of applied sciences such as engineering, medicine, agriculture, etc. The Department occupies the CH1 and CH2 wings of the Engineering complex at JUST. Currently, the department has 18 faculty members, about 350 undergraduate students, about 50 graduate students (M.Sc. program), 6 teaching laboratories, 7 research laboratories, and 2 computer laboratories.

The Chemical Engineering program is accredited by the  Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) (http://www.abet.org), the recognized U.S. accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.

The ChE Department seeks to graduate highly qualified chemical engineers to help in the development plans and to satisfy the national needs of Jordan as well as to provide our graduate the education needed to work in the neighboring countries or anywhere in the world in various areas including, but not limited to, petrochemical, petroleum refining, biochemical, pharmaceutical, water treatment, desalination, energy, environmental pollution control, mineral processing, advanced materials, and food technologies.

Since its inception, the department searched for highly qualified faculty members, mainly through a well-coordinated scholarship program, where recipients went abroad mainly to top universities in the USA and Canada to obtain their M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The students enrolled in the undergraduate program are chosen among the top 10% of the secondary school graduate. All the textbooks adopted for the courses are like those used by USA universities. The overall setup regarding the semester system, method of teaching, advising, and assessment of student performance is like that administered in most USA universities.
