This graduate degree is ideal for the artist who wants to incorporate education into their professional practice, arts practitioners interested in starting community-based programs or certified teachers who would like to develop their artistic practice through arts research.

The program is also geared toward teaching effective collaboration with school administrators, parents and caregivers, members of the community and staff members of relevant agencies and cultural institutions.

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is for artists interested in acquiring the Initial New York State certification in PreK-12 Visual Arts using a personal approach to support, coach and mentor future art teachers. In this program students put theories from coursework into practice through concentrated, hands-on teaching experiences in New York City schools. This degree program provides candidates with the skills to create dynamic and engaging art curricula supported with caring and innovative instructional strategies that incorporate New York State Learning Standards.

Students are prepared for all NYSED mandated workshops, NYSTCE exams and fingerprinting approval by New York state.
