Each PhD student will undertake a 80,000-word project under expert supervision, exploring a topic and produce a thesis (maximum word count below), which will be defended in a viva. The Faculty of Health Sciences provides opportunities for research to MPhil and PhD level or MPhil with transfer to PhD. PhD requires in-depth investigation of a topic and an original contribution to existing knowledge. As part of the research development students will also complete a short course (the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods) that builds up their knowledge and skills concerning the nature and practicalities of academic research.
