The Universidad de Santiago de Chile is one of the nation's largest state universities. Created 153 years ago as the Arts and Trade School, it was later united with other educational institutions and diverse provincial branches to form the State Technical University in 1947, becoming the present-day University. It continued as a scientific and technological University, taking on the challenge of providing professional instruction for the nation's industrialization. It is a University with diverse undergraduate and graduate programs, additional educational offerings, with an emphasis on academic excellence and humanistic values. The University's is dedicated to a concern for the creation, preservation, development, and sharing of knowledge through up-to-date research, teaching and extension in sciences, arts, humanities and technological fields.
