Modern computer systems are made up of several computing components that are interconnected at all levels, whether they be big servers supporting cloud services or distributed computing systems that comprise the edge and interact with the outside world via sensors and actuators, forming what has come to be known as the Internet of Things (IoT).
We are currently witnessing dramatic growth in connectivity, the size of systems and the number of devices connected to the internet. The amount of data that has to be processed is growing rapidly, and it has to be obtained from heterogeneous and, often, widely scattered sources.
