As well as building a repertoire of strong subject-specific skills, students will also gain transferable skills applicable to a variety of careers. Why study this course? History and Italian form a strong degree combination with many interconnected topics available, allowing you to explore historical topics ranging from the medieval period to the present day, from British and European to American and African history, and from political and economic history to social and cultural history, as well as studying in depth the political and social culture of Italy. Reading is a leading international centre for the study of Italian history and Italian Studies offers many specialist modules with a historical focus from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the modern period throughout the degree. On the History side, you will be able to expand your range of interests and develop comparative critical approaches by specialising in particular periods and topics of history, ranging from Britain and Europe to Russia, the Middle East, South Asia, and the USA. After the course A global market demands language skills; by the time you graduate, you can expect to be able to write and speak fluently in Italian - an immensely useful skill to have. Careers of recent Italian graduates range from translating, teaching and research to marketing, financial services, the international art business (Christie’s), business, journalism and the fashion and travel industries. Reading History graduates are valued by a wide range of employers thanks to the broad set of transferable skills developed during the course, with past graduates having gone into careers in all areas of the private and public sectors, including journalism, publishing, TV production, web design, accountancy, law, banking and management.
