The course stems from the over 50-years’ experience of teaching and research in Statistics at the University of Siena, gathered first with the course in "Statistical and Economic Sciences" and then with the master's degree course in “Statistics for Sample Surveys”. The course prepares graduates who, by translating knowledge demands into rigorous terms, are capable of understanding, describing, and analysing complex phenomena in numerous contexts, including social, economic, environmental, ecological, medical and pharmaceutical settings.

In fact, the course provides adequate knowledge of the procedures for collecting and managing data deriving from both traditional and new sources (big data, open data) and of the suitable methodologies for their analysis using data processing tools, distinctive to the data scientist.

The cultural and professional profile will allow the graduate to enter positions of high responsibility in public and private sectors, such as national and international research institutes, international agencies, public administration, pharmaceutical companies and companies in the credit, insurance, and market research sectors, among others.
