Social scientists increasingly have access to data sets of unparalleled scope and complexity. New technologies have made the collection of that data - by governments, private companies, or innovative researchers - possible. Advances in computer science and statistics have allowed for inferential, simulated, and visual analyses that are only now being incorporated into faculty research. For those new to the social sciences, this is an opportunity to see where your computer science and statistical skills can go, with innovative applications to problems of massive societal interest. For those new to computational methods, this is a chance to develop the tools necessary to make new and exciting contributions, tools that will shape the originality and power of your work for years to come. The goal of this program would be to provide a collection of courses that give students the foundation to work with, integrate, ask and answer social science questions of large scale social data - sourced from the web, social media, email, cell phone and sensors-ranging from social networks and text to image, audio and administrative records (e.g. electronic medical records, police reports). A student interested in this area could go on to study a wide range of social phenomena, such as social relationships, identity and inequality through social media, urban communities, institutions and space via social sensors, immigration and social integration through administrative records, and the social dynamics underlying large-scale institutions like medicine, science & technology, and business through a range of modalities. UChicagoGRAD is a one-stop shop of integrated services to help graduate students and postdocs navigate their academic and professional careers. Led by Sian Beilock, Executive Vice Provost, UChicagoGRAD programs provide flexible training that complements support in academic units.
