Emerson’s new Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Communication prepares you for a wide array of careers in the sports, including the emerging gaming entertainment field, by providing you with the most important skill for success: a strong foundation in strategic communication. Well known for its acclaimed programs in communication, media, and entertainment, Emerson has produced scores of successful alumni who lead and work with organizations and teams throughout the ever-expanding world of sports. In addition, Boston is one of the nation’s top sports cities, with organizations and teams that draw regional, national, and global interest, offering rich opportunities for experiential learning. For those yearning for a more international sports communication experience, our Barcelona Sports Communication Workshop includes opportunities for internships with BARCA, Puma, Coca-Cola, and other global sports brands. Since the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Emerson students have enjoyed immersive Olympics sports experiences in Barcelona, Atlanta, Athens, Nagano, Sydney, and Beijing, as well as internships and special sports programs with InBev, the United Nations, and others. In the Sports Communication major, you will learn that sports are far more than just a pastime – the sports industry is one of the top revenue-generating industries in the world, widely influential from a cultural, political, and communication perspective. You will also study how sports can serve as “soft power” in public diplomacy efforts, bridging cultures and fostering dialogues. You will learn how to solve crises, negotiate agreements, and craft strategic sports messages. Your professors are true practitioners, bringing with them years of first-hand sports communication knowledge that will amplify your classroom experience. Program coursework is designed for flexibility, with a balance of core courses as well as electives from which you can choose based on your career aspirations. The curriculum is designed with a digital focus, covering topics such as data analytics, social media, web design, and mobile communication. Courses are continuously evolving based on new trends in the industry, like e-sports and fantasy sports, crisis management, sports PR, and strategic communication, ensuring that you remain on the cutting edge in sports communication, no matter where your career takes you. At Emerson, you also learn by doing - working at sporting venues, crafting special events and campaigns, and interning with a variety of sports organizations in Boston, in the U.S., and worldwide. You will connect and network with our many sports industry alumni through speaker series and class visits, and studying for a semester at locations like Emerson’s Los Angeles center, Washington, D.C., and Barcelona with internship and alumni connections that span the globe. If sports is your game, join the oldest communication team in the business – become a Sports Communication major at Emerson.
