The study of literature, how writers produce it, and how it affects individuals and society is essential to a liberal arts education. Literary study also may explore the effects of history, religion, science, philosophy, and other disciplines upon readers and writers of different times and places. Emory's program gives undergraduates knowledge of the different genres and periods of British, American, and other Anglophone literatures and of literature as an index to culture in the broadest sense. It also stresses instruction in the techniques of analysis, research, and writing.
