Fezzan University was established with the mission of accommodating the growing number of students from across southern Libya, with the goal of preparing highly qualified scientific professionals capable of contributing to local development and competing effectively in the labor market. In addition to its educational objectives, the university aspires to play a pivotal role in serving the local community, thereby fostering security and stability throughout the southern region—particularly in border areas.
The university offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs and currently includes multiple campuses distributed across southern Libyan cities, including Murzuq, Ubari, and Ghat. Its academic focus spans a wide range of disciplines, including basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science; applied and professional fields such as engineering, accounting, law, and nursing; as well as medical sciences. Fezzan University emphasises the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications and is committed to enhancing collaboration with regional and international research institutions.
Fezzan University originated from General People’s Committee Resolution No. 535 (2007), which established the University of the Valley with eight colleges in Murzuq, Ubari, and Ghat. It was restructured as Fezzan University by Council of Ministers Resolution No. 138 (2017), with its main campus in Murzuq. Two more colleges were added in 2018 through Ministerial Decision No. 1544.
