The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering was founded in the 1950s. We are a dynamic and multi-disciplinary Department with a very strong background in applied research. Over the years, the profile of the Department has broadened in scope, and now covers both the industrial and service sectors.

We have a critical mass of academic staff members who are world-class researchers in the strategic research areas of the Department, and whose research activities are supported by state-of-the-art research facilities and centres. These include the State Key Laboratory of Ultra-precision Machining Technology, Laser Materials Processing Laboratory, Netshape Manufacturing Technology Unit, Advanced Optics Manufacturing Centre, Printed Circuit Board Technology Centre, Materials Engineering Laboratory, Behaviour and Knowledge Engineering Research Centre, PolyU-Microsoft Enterprise Systems Centre, the Micro/Nano Fabrication Laboratory, Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory, the Ng Tat Lun Digital Factory and the Integrated Product Design Laboratory.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) (2-year full-time/4-year part-time)

At least hold a Bachelor’s degree with Second Class Honours or above (or equivalent qualification) conferred by a recognised university

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (3-year full-time/6-year part-time)

Normally hold a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or equivalent (a research postgraduate degree with a dissertation as an award requirement) and a Bachelor's degree, conferred by a recognised university

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (4-year full-time/8-year part-time)

Normally hold:

  • A Master’s degree and a Bachelor's degree, conferred by a recognised university; OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent qualification), conferred by a recognised university
