The Digital Design program is an intensive program that balances the discipline of design, artistic exploration, and social responsibility within the rich tradition of the liberal arts environment. Through a focus on content-driven work, students learn visual problem solving and acquire communication skills informed by critical theory and the history of digital art and design. The curriculum includes typography, digital imaging, graphic design, and digital media for print, for the web, for animation, for video, for interactive graphics, and for sound. The program focuses on the creative process of art and design from concept to production. At the advanced level, students have the opportunity to combine theory and practice through readings and discussions, research, in-depth critiques, exhibitions, internships, and hands-on workshops within a technologically sophisticated studio environment. Digital Design students should be able to: Apply their understanding of the theory and history of digital art and design to the analysis and evaluation of artistic creations and commercial design productions in a variety of cultural contexts and settings; Demonstrate proficiency in up-to-date computer skills such as Adobe Creative Suite: digital imaging, digital illustration, layout, web design, and interactive design to produce artistic/design work; Articulate their personal vision through creative art and design and explain that vision effectively to multiple audiences, in various situations, and through diverse channels of communication; Perform and communicate effectively as professional artists/designers in both individual and collaborative settings to propose, manage, and complete design projects; Prepare an effective professional portfolio suitable for career applications in the design industries or for admittance into highly competitive graduate programs in the arts.
