The Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry prepares students for excellence in graduate or medical school, and employment in the chemical, biotechnological, or pharmaceutical industries. Students learn a wide array of topics in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. In upper division studies, Biochemistry majors learn to apply biochemical principles to real-life situations via problem-based approaches in their courses. Laboratory courses give students the tools they will need as biochemists to pursue research. Accomplished majors are encouraged to pursue independent research with a professor, and to present their work internally and at national meetings. Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes occurring in living matter. As a field, biochemistry is rapidly expanding and highly interdisciplinary. Biochemical concepts and techniques have become the basis for research in physiology, nutrition, environmental and health sciences, and many other disciplines. After completing this program, students should: have problem-solving skills and be able to research biochemical literature communicate the results of scientific experiments in oral and written reports and technical graphics work effectively as part of a team as developed through their laboratory courses articulate the relationships between chemistry and biological sciences succeed as graduate students in biochemistry or related fields, as students in professional schools, or as entry-level employees in government or industry perform basic biochemistry laboratory procedures used in the manipulation and analysis of proteins and nucleic acids. Careers: The program prepares students for excellence in graduate or medical school, employment in the chemical, biotechnological, or pharmaceutical industries. The degree is a terrific stepping stone for graduate programs in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, and many other related fields.
