The IEB was created in 1962 by Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, then as a center interdisciplinary approach to research and documentation on the culture and history of Brazil, with the founding challenge of reflecting on Brazilian society by articulating areas of knowledge in the field of humanities. The research proposal and interpretation of the Brazilian reality of its founder, institutionally materialized in the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros, is marked by care in the elaboration of correspondences between social formations and artistic expressions, in short, the studies of forms and underlying realities of society and culture.

The multidisciplinary Postgraduate program in Brazilian Cultures and Identities, with a concentration area in "Brazilian Studies", was created in April 2008, recommended by the Coordination for the Improvement of Level Personnel Superior in October of the same year and started operating in 2009. The objective include conducting research and developing reflections on the Brazilian society from this perspective. Multidisciplinarity is constitutive of this postgraduate program and not just a methodological resource, being apprehension procedure and problematization of the real.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program will take place through a selection process standardized by a specific public notice to be prepared by the CCP and periodically published in the Official Gazette of the State of São Paulo and on the program's website on the internet.
