The University of Madras, established in 1857, is a prestigious institution that has historically held authority over the former Madras Presidency as an affiliated university. Often referred to as the "mother of all South Indian universities," its jurisdiction is currently limited to four districts in Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram.

While the university has affiliations with a diverse array of colleges across various disciplines—including arts, sciences and Interdisciplinary Subjects —its current collaborations primarily focus on research institutions and colleges in the fields of arts, commerce, management, and sciences. The University of Madras is actively engaged in postgraduate teaching and research, boasting 136 affiliated colleges, 72 teaching and research departments, and 46 research centres dedicated to arts, sciences, and management.

Recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a "University with Potential for Excellence," the University of Madras pioneered the concept of autonomous colleges within the university system. Currently, 24 autonomous colleges are affiliated with the University of Madras, with several designated as "Colleges with Potential for Excellence" by the UGC.

To enhance access to higher education, the university established the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in 1981. The IDE currently offers a range of programs, including 17 undergraduate programs, 21 postgraduate programs, 19 diploma programs, and 16 certificate programs—all accredited by the UGC's Distance Education Bureau (DEB).

In recognition of its academic excellence, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded the University of Madras an 'A++' grade with a CGPA of 3.59 on a four-point scale during its fourth cycle in 2023. Additionally, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024, the university ranks 39th among universities and 12th among State Public Universities.
