established in 1857, is a prestigious institution that has historically held
authority over the former Madras Presidency as an affiliated university. Often
referred to as the "mother of all South Indian universities," its

To enhance access to higher education,
the university established the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in 1981.
The IDE currently offers a range of programs, including 17 undergraduate programs,
21 postgraduate programs, 19 diploma programs, and 16 certificate programs—all
accredited by the UGC's Distance Education Bureau (DEB).
In recognition of its academic
excellence, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded
the University of Madras an 'A++' grade with a CGPA of 3.59 on a four-point
scale during its fourth cycle in 2023. Additionally, according to the National
Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024, the university ranks 39th
among universities and 12th among State Public Universities.
