The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in art is a liberal arts degree focusing on studio art practice. The curriculum is designed to train students to think critically, communicate clearly, and work creatively. Students develop an understanding of materials and tools, formal possibilities, technical skills, critical inquiry, and ways of seeing, as well as fluency in visual languages and the articulation of meaning. They gain an understanding of the larger context of art through courses in art history and theory, opportunities to study abroad, and lectures by visiting artists. The curriculum includes course work in eight media areas-painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital media, photography, ceramics, fibers, and metalsmithing and jewellery. While all art majors share the basic requirements such as the core foundations courses and art history, students have the flexibility to pursue more advanced course work in the areas of primary interest to them.
