This course offers the knowledge and skills in instrumentation, control and computer systems engineering which are needed in a range of careers in mining, oil and gas, chemical and mineral processing industries, food and pharmaceuticals, defence and related industries, utility supply, transportation industries, electronics and communication industries, chemical and petrochemical, information technology or consulting firms. In the Instrumentation and Control component of the course, candidates will learn about classical control systems concepts, and how to design, evaluate and install instrument and control systems. Candidates will work on large-scale case studies and use engineering software packages to model and simulate processes, design and implement appropriate control systems, and evaluate the performance of those systems. Candidates will also learn how to identify suitable performance indicators to ensure the efficiency and safety of engineering systems. In the Industrial Computer Systems Engineering, candidates will learn about the use and application of computing technologies in the operation of modern industrial plants, manufacturing processes and material processing industries, with a focus on computer-based measurement and control. Candidates will learn how to design, commission and test complex industrial control systems and have the opportunity to design, commission and test small-scale systems involving programming, networking and interfacing to instruments, gain problem solving skills for computer based measurement and control systems using LabVIEW, and work on projects that explore the specification, design, commissioning and testing phases of typical systems development.
