Future livestock farming models must be based on sustainability, within the framework of competitive and animal welfare-friendly production systems. Animal breeding not only contributes to the sustainability of production and increases its profitability, but also makes it possible, through new technologies, to improve its efficiency and adapt it to divergent consumer demand. Thus, population and quantitative genetics, molecular genetics and reproductive biotechnology, are currently basic subjects in livestock breeding development.
Population genetics has been responsible for major advances in breeds and animal populations used in production, and the more recently developed molecular genetics is increasingly contributing to breeding. Finally, reproductive biotechnology offers tools that enhance and facilitate the application of both quantitative and molecular breeding methods.
The programme provides solid training in these essential basic subjects that underpin animal breeding, and allows the acquisition of experience through the critical review of current breeding and reproductive biotechnology programmes carried out in different species, discussions with professionals in the sector and technical visits to public and private institutions involved in breeding programmes.
