Mechatronics Engineering represents the fusion of technologies such as control, mechanics, electricity, electronics and computer science that enable the engineering challenges posed by new intelligent machines to be addressed. It is a natural choice to explain a process whose purpose, since its origin, has been the creation of advanced products and engineering systems that are inextricably linked by the synergistic combination of mechanical, electronic, control and computer technologies.
This term was coined by the Japanese industry in the 1970s - when the first industrial robots were developed - and among its immediate antecedents, is research in the area of cybernetics, numerical control machines, manipulators and programmable logic controllers. Today, robotics has come to be considered a generic term and yet, from a formal point of view, it could be considered a subset of Mechatronics. In many respects, Mechatronics is heir to the so-called 'Electromechanical Systems' or 'Automation and Control Systems'.
