This program develops an awareness of current thought and practice in TESL education. TESL graduate students gain experience and understanding in such areas as: current issues in TESL theory and practice, second language acquisition, second language reading and writing, language socialization, language and identity, second language assessment, discourse analysis, critical applied linguistics, and research methods. The university aims to deliver a high quality learning environment that embeds intellectual curiosity, innovation and best practice in learning, teaching and student support to enable students to achieve their full academic potential.  The employment record of graduates from the University of British Columbia is excellent, with the vast majority entering occupations of their choice within months of graduation.

CV or resume outlining work experience and academic history, a well-written 500 word (maximum) Statement of Intent, and letters of support of three referees are required. If admitted, all official transcripts and degree certificates from all post-secondary institutions attended outside UBC. Supervisor commitment not required prior to application. An approved Bachelor’s degree and, for K-12 teachers, one year of teacher education;* OR a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Education is required. Two years of formal teaching experience is required. Please check with the University for entry requirements.
