The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree is approved and accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council and the Institute of Biomedical Science. Laboratory work is an important part of this course, giving students the high-level skills and understanding required of a trained biomedical scientist by the time they graduate. This degree will cover the broad areas of human bioscience and diagnostic science, including medical microbiology, immunology, histology, haematology, medical genetics and cancer alongside basic sciences such as biochemistry, physiology, molecular and cell biology. Students may opt to take more practical applied biomedical sciences route, in which case LJMU will organise visits to hospital labs during Level 4 to help students decide. Acceptance onto this route is by competitive application. If successful, the student will spend about 1,000 hours working in a local pathology laboratory and gaining academic credit for his/her work-based study.
