The negative effects of environmental degradation on human health have been recognized for millennia. Today, exposure to pesticides, heavy metals and particulates produced by industry, chemical spills, lack of access to healthy food, among others, have become more prevalent, often disproportionately affecting the marginalized and economically disadvantaged. In developing countries, lack of potable water is responsible for countless deaths. A warming planet has expanded the range of disease vectors, such as mosquitoes, exposing human populations to novel disease agents, and extended droughts and flooding events have caused people to move off their land, becoming environmental refugees in search of a more suitable and stable climate to live and grow food. Thus, the need for public health professionals with expertise in the environmental realm is expanding. Through this program, students will learn about the factors contributing to the global burden of environmental health concerns and health disparities and to work effectively within local and global communities to address them. The BS in Environmental Public Health will prepare students to become environmental public health professionals in state, local or regional health agencies, water/air quality management districts, biomedical companies, health education institutes and non-governmental organizations focused on health issues.
