Engineering Design is the art and science of creating innovative solutions that satisfy our economic, environmental and societal goals. The technical and organizational designs we develop will literally shape our future. As a Design engineer, you will learn how to approach the most complex problems in a structured manner, design for people and society, and gain knowledge on incorporating cutting-edge technology. You will be part of innovation projects that develop products, services and systems.

The study programme provides you with the proper tools and methods for meeting the challenge of combining structured problem solving, user engagement and technical disciplines in a range of innovation projects.

Design and Innovation equips you with the competencies required for carrying out engineering and organizational development design tasks. Therefore, the MSc Eng programme builds on both design science as well as technical disciplines. It is characterised by an academic competency that combines the following aspects:

Structured problem-solving processes that develop your creative synthesis competence and consider social, technical, environmental and economic aspects.

A people-centric understanding of the design process, allowing you to understand and integrate users and other stakeholders in your design process.

A reflective technical-scientific competence, qualifying you to participate in and lead engineering design activities.

The study programme aims to develop your creative skills and abilities to analyse the interaction between the user, technology, organization and environment. You will gain knowledge of one or more technical domains, learn to develop and communicate problem and solution concepts, and implement innovation processes in private and public organizations.

One of the most distinguishing features of the Design and Innovation programme is the long-standing tradition of project work and using different teaching methods. The programme is taught by lecturers from DTU Civil & Mechanical Engineering, DTU Entrepreneurship, DTU Compute, DTU Elektro, DTU Sustain and other departments and centers. By drawing on expertise from across the university, all core areas of the study programme, design methods, system and product design, material technology, innovation management, digital innovation and sustainability are covered.

You will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with both Danish and international companies - either as part of the courses, as an individual project or while writing your thesis.

The MSc Eng is a two-year graduate programme with a workload of 120 ECTS credit points.

General admission requirements
Only applicants holding a relevant Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering (diplomingeniøruddannelse) or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. The bachelor's degree must be less than ten years old.

The individual MSc Eng programme states in detail which bachelor programmes qualify and whether applicants must complete supplementary educational activities.

Requirements for supplementary educational activities can equate to up to 30 ECTS credits and are specified as a list of courses under the individual MSc Eng programmes.

The specific requirements must be met before graduating from the bachelor's programme or in connection with conditional admission to a particular MSc Eng programme. The courses must be passed prior to the commencement of studies within one year from the conditional admission.

Supplementary educational activities in connection with conditional admission to an MSc Eng programme do not form part of the MSc Eng programme, and tuition fees are charged. If the supplementary courses have not been passed within the specified deadlines, the conditional admission to the programme is withdrawn.

The Master of Science in Engineering programmes are offered in English. Therefore applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English (B-level, IELTS, TOEFL, CAE)

International Applicants (holding a Bachelor from outside Denmark)
Bachelors with relevant engineering education from other universities than DTU have access to admission based on an individual evaluation. The academic requirements are (1) at least one, better two or more, design projects and (2) courses that provide the applicant with the knowledge and skills that are achieved during the completion of a BSc in Design & Innovation at DTU. As a minimum this includes the following competences:

  • systematic design methods
  • accomplishment of a design or product development project
  • industrial design
  • socio-technical analysis and design demonstrating interaction with users
  • mechanics and materials
  • foundation in natural sciences, including mathematics, statistics, programming, physics, chemistry and biology

Language test requirements

All applicants applying for admission to English-taught MSc programmes are legally required to provide documentation of English language proficiency comparable with English B-level from Danish upper-secondary school, as per Ministerial Order no. 40 of 20 January 2025 (BEK nr. 40 af 20/01/2025), paragraph 36.

You must upload the official score sheet to your application. Please note, DTU does not receive physical or digital tests from the test providers. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that an official score sheet is provided by the deadline.

DTU will not make any exceptions to the minimum test scores. If conditionally admitted students cannot meet them, DTU will not be able to enroll them.

Please note, TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic are valid for 2 years.

* Only IELTS Academic tests are accepted. DTU does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake.

** DTU does not accept “My Best Scores”.
