Graduates from the MSc Materials and Manufacturing Engineering programme solve engineering challenges in high-tech production across different industries by optimizing manufacturing processes, providing digital sustainable solutions and using advanced materials.

Study Programme
In the Materials and Manufacturing Engineering programme you will discover the world of materials, the transformation from materials to final components, the evaluation of product qualities, and the technologies used in creating advanced products.

These skills are crucial for creating products in health tech, the toys industry, the energy sector, automotive industry, aeronautics and medical devices and are essential for the future green transition and more environmentally-friendly practices.

Focus of the Materials and Manufacturing Engineering programme

The programme focus is to develop and optimize products with improved functionality and extended lifetime which require:

  • Detailed understanding of the internal structure of materials and how this affects the material properties and performance
  • Knowledge of materials degradation mechanisms and how to prevent these
  • Awareness of the environmental impact of the production processes
  • Mastering advanced processing technologies for manufacturing and post-processing of high-tech products
  • Application of digital tools in the design, optimization and evaluation of materials, products and production technologies
  • Proficiency in designing and optimizing of product properties
  • Evaluation of quality and performances of products
  • Analysis of data obtained in study cases from different industries
The programme enables you to predict, control, and optimize the specific properties of materials. It also shows you how to improve industrial process technologies for making advanced product solutions at both the micro and macro scales.

The interaction between materials, processes, products, properties, and performance is central to the programme and is reflected in the programme title ‘Materials and Manufacturing Engineering’.

The Materials and Manufacturing Engineering programme is very application-oriented, and the teaching is based on most recent research directly connected to industry needs.

Besides theoretical courses and using computer models you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and testing tools.

Your projects will most often be inspired by real industry situations and carried out in collaboration with industry. You will therefore be working with relevant, real-world cases throughout the entire study programme.

Curriculum

The MSc is a two-year graduate programme with a workload of 120 ECTS credit points.

General admission requirements

Only applicants holding a relevant Bachelor of Science in Engineering, a Bachelor in Engineering (diplomingeniøruddannelse) or a Bachelor of Natural Science degree can be admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering programme. The bachelor's degree must be less than ten years old.

The individual MSc Eng programme states in detail which bachelor programmes qualify and whether applicants must complete supplementary educational activities.

Requirements for supplementary educational activities can equate to up to 30 ECTS credits and are specified as a list of courses under the individual MSc Eng programmes.

The specific requirements must be met before graduating from the bachelor's programme or in connection with conditional admission to a particular MSc Eng programme. The courses must be passed prior to the commencement of studies within one year from the conditional admission.

Supplementary educational activities in connection with conditional admission to an MSc Eng programme do not form part of the MSc Eng programme, and tuition fees are charged. If the supplementary courses have not been passed within the specified deadlines, the conditional admission to the programme is withdrawn.

The Master of Science in Engineering programmes are offered in English. Therefore applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English (B-level, IELTS, TOEFL, CAE).

International Applicants

Many international universities provide the required background for students to continue with the MSc education in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.

Students with a BSc Eng or BEng degree from an international university can be admitted when they have completed an engineering education in, for example, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, chemical or civil engineering, or when they have another relevant academic background. All applicants have to document that fundamentals in Materials Science and Technology have been passed as part of their bachelor education. Corresponding DTU courses are listed above.

Language test requirements

All applicants applying for admission to English-taught MSc programmes are legally required to provide documentation of English language proficiency comparable with English B-level from Danish upper-secondary school, as per Ministerial Order no. 40 of 20 January 2025 (BEK nr. 40 af 20/01/2025), paragraph 36.

You must upload the official score sheet to your application. Please note, DTU does not receive physical or digital tests from the test providers. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that an official score sheet is provided by the deadline.

DTU will not make any exceptions to the minimum test scores. If conditionally admitted students cannot meet them, DTU will not be able to enroll them.

Please note, TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic are valid for 2 years.

* Only IELTS Academic tests are accepted. DTU does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake.

** DTU does not accept “My Best Scores”.
