The PhD in Political Science is designed to train students to conduct advanced scholarly research in international relations, comparative politics, or political economy and to prepare them for academic and research-oriented careers.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes are: 

  • Identify major cases, evolution, and trends in the selected sub-fields of political science, such as international relations, comparative politics, political economy, or political theory, etc.
  • Illustrate key concepts, theories, and approaches in the selected sub-fields of political science, including such as international relations, comparative politics, political economy, or political theory, etc.
  • Undertake original and innovative research of theoretical and practical nature in the selected subfields.
  • Acquire essential competence in career development so as to be competitive on the job market, and to be able to competently conduct research and teaching or other related work in higher education institutions or the equivalent.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of scholarly ethics and professional practice.

  • General Entry (for Master’s Degree Holders): Possess a Master’s degree or academic background recognized as equivalent by the University of Macau.
  • Accelerated Entry (for UM Master Students): Have been registered in a Master’s Programme at the University of Macau for at least one year. Have successfully finished the coursework part with outstanding performance and have demonstrated strong research ability.
  • Direct Entry (for Bachelor’s Degree Holders): Possess a Bachelor’s degree with outstanding performance and have demonstrated strong research ability
  • College English Test (CET) score is acceptable to some academic units, please visit corresponding website of each academic unit for details.
