Study Level

PHD

The department offers the PhD degree with four research areas of emphasis: Bioenergy and Bioproducts engineering; Food Engineering; Land, Air, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering; and Agricultural Automation Engineering. From solar drying and pasteurization research in the 1970’s to today’s emphasis on biological waste analysis and treatment, chemical transport through soils, food engineering, bioenergy, bioproducts, and more, our department has a long history of technical environmental stewardship, research and education. The researchers and graduate students of this department come from all corners of the United States and the world. Because of this diversity, our students leave here with the global awareness, the advanced education and the technical expertise to become the key players in the economic, technical, and environmental challenges that face us all. Agricultural Automation Engineering scientists work to provide engineering solutions to crop production problems in agriculture. From seed to table, our researchers collaborate with the growers, harvesters, and food processors plus the industry that supports them to develop new technologies for the economic growth and environmental sustainability of agriculture. Bioenergy & Bioproducts (BBE) scientists work toward advancing science and technologies to convert biomass, including wastes, into useful products, fuels, and fuel additives. Our food engineering scientists develop advanced thermal and non thermal processing techniques in order to produce safe and nutritious food. These same researchers foster close collaboration with the food industry to optimize existing products and to develop new foods using emerging technologies and processes. Land, Air, Water Resources & Environmental Engineering (LAWREE) scientists apply their biological and engineering expertise in fundamental research of global food industry problems. Using the tools of observational research and testing, resource management, and technology development, LAWREE scientists investigate real-world phenomena related to hydrologic processes from the field level to watersheds covering large geographical regions.
