A sport management education provides students with the planning and administrative skills needed to contribute to the success of organizations that focus on sport activities, sport products, or sport services. The Department of Educational Leadership, Sport Studies, and Educational/Counseling Psychology offers a major in Sport Management which leads to a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management. The Sport Management major provides professional preparation for those students wishing to pursue a management career with sport organizations or in sport businesses. Students must complete a core program in sport management and must select an area of specialization from business or communication. Additional information on the areas of specialization can be obtained from the department. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required for certification as a major. The Sport Management curriculum is designed to enable graduating students to: 1) incorporate an understanding of ethical, legal, and socio-cultural issues in managerial decision making and policy determinations in sport; 2) employ sound principles of strategic planning, financial management, risk management, and human resource management in sport; 3) apply a fundamental knowledge and practical understanding of sport marketing, communication, and event management principles; 4) utilize critical thinking and abstract reasoning skills in analyzing sport management issues and in managerial planning and decision making; and 5) demonstrate information literacy and oral, written, and group communication skills. The Sport Management curriculum is designed to enable graduating students to: Identify and analyze ethical, legal, and socio-cultural issues in managerial decision making and policy determinations in sport. Employ principles of strategic planning, and financial and human resource management in sport. Assess marketing and media needs in sport and formulate short-term and long-term solutions. Develop and apply critical thinking and abstract reasoning skills in analyzing sport management issues and in managerial planning and decision making. Demonstrate information literacy and communication skills. Conceive, plan, execute, and evaluate a sports event. Career options in sport management: University athletic programs (alumni relations, marketing and promotions, athletic conference offices, event management). Community agencies (Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, recreational sports programs), Amateur sport programs (Special Olympics, sports clubs and camps, community sports programs), Professional sports (public relations, corporate sponsorships, group sales), Sport merchandising (team sales, regional sales), Radio/TV (sports production, sports broadcasting, public relations).
