Natural and Human-made hazards are responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of damage driven by global warming, rapidly changing land use and expansion of the world population. Earthquakes, floods, landslides and other extreme events affect more people every year at an unprecedented rate. Appropriate strategies can mitigate the impact of these events through urban planning that integrates civil engineering, nature-based solutions, and appropriate zoning. Rapid processing of geo-referenced data, combined with risk modelling, can improve warning systems and save lives. Beyond these strategies, airborne and satellite images, and open access databases have been developed by Europe to help professionals in risk management.

The MSc RISKS provides an advanced understanding of environmental hazards and expertise in risks management with a focus on data analysis and GIS/remote sensing. You will learn how to mitigate the impact of natural hazards and will have a complete understanding of the elements of risk management: planning, mitigation, monitoring, scenario modelling, legislation and warning systems.

Our pedagogy is proactive and combines theory and a project-based approach to work on historical and current case studies in order to immerse students in the heart of complex situations.
