The PhD will analyse funding and operational resilience within the UK youth sector. Specifically, it will focus on “out of school youth provision” which includes, for example, local authority youth services, national uniformed youth organisations, and other voluntary community organisations. The project will address the following research question: “How is the youth sector funded and how resilient is the youth sector?” The focus on resilience includes both funding but also organisational resilience i.e. workforce resilience; premises and facilities.
The PhD project will utilise secondary data sources and generate new primary data (provisionally survey data, interview material and ethnographic approaches). The finalised methods and exact case-studies (likely to include each provider type) will be determined after an extensive literature review and research design phase. Potential research sub-questions include: how do we classify what resilience is in the youth sector? What impacts resilience? What can be done to support organisations to be more resilient?
This PhD is jointly funded by Loughborough University and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). There are clear pathways to impact embedded into the PhD programme, including interim meetings with an industrial supervisor at DCMS and opportunities for knowledge exchange.
