By the time you complete your language requirements, you will have gone from a beginner to an advanced German language speaker. Though you do not need to enter the program with any prior knowledge of the language, you may begin at the intermediate or advanced level if you took German courses in high school, CEGEP, or through McGill Summer Studies. This will allow you to better appreciate German culture, converse with other German speakers and unlock the career benefits of knowing multiple languages.

You can explore a variety of media like visual art, film and literature in the context of different periods of German history, from the eighteenth century all the way up to today. The German tradition in literature, thought, art, music, and scientific inquiry has influenced all fields of the humanities, arts, and the social sciences, making it an exciting area of study. Some of these courses will be taught In German, allowing you to further develop your language skills.

To fully immerse yourself in the study of German, you can choose to expand your minor into the German Studies Major or Honours program.
