Statistics is motivated by the need to extract information from data, quantify uncertainty, and make predictions about random phenomena. Sophisticated mathematical and probabilistic techniques and computational tools are needed to carry out this work effectively. Core areas of expertise within the field include Bayesian inference, biostatistics, computational statistics, high-dimensional data modeling, multivariate analysis, and survival analysis.

In the Faculty of Arts, Statistics is offered as both a Major and Minor program. Both will provide you with fundamental knowledge of statistical models, methods, and procedures, and train you to collect, analyze and interpret data. These skills can complement knowledge acquired from other disciplines.

When taken with the Supplementary Minor Concentration, the Statistics Major Concentration constitutes an equivalent to the B.Sc Major in Statistics program. The combination of the two programs can lead to the “A.Stat” accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada, which is regarded as the entry level requirement for a statistician practicing in Canada.
