The Fashion Merchandising (FM) major prepares students for fashion management relative to planning, development, sourcing, distribution, and communication of fashion products in the global environment. The program underscores the business aspects of these core skill sets within the apparel industry and emphasizes sustainability and social responsibility. In addition to coursework in textiles and apparel, the curriculum requires courses from the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and business. Specialized courses and elective options add diversity to the program and offer an opportunity for students to select courses in apparel design, computer-aided design, historic costume, and textile conservation. A graduate certificate in Social Responsibility and Sustainable Apparel Business is also an option. Collectively, these courses help students plan and promote fashion products, design and use visual communication, define and analyze target markets, evaluate products and consumption patterns and assist companies in developing, administering and maintaining sustainability programs.
