In this program students must maintain a GPA of 3.00 to take Honors courses and remain in the Honors Program. All Honors Program students will be reviewed yearly. Any Honors students falling below a 3.00 GPA at the end of any year of study will be contacted and removed from the Honors Program. They are also required to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science in accounting. The Department of Accounting & MIS offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Accounting. The undergraduate program is designed to prepare the student for a career in industry, government, or public accounting. Many accounting majors also pursue the minor in Management Information Systems that is offered by the department. A Major in Management Information Systems is also available. Careers: The study of accounting is relevant to a wide range of occupations. Many students start their careers in public accounting. Accounting graduates enjoy a high rate of employment in many local, national and international firms. The accounting program provides an excellent foundation for the Certified Public Accountant examination, which many students sit for after graduating. Other students obtain employment in private industry, such as banking and other financial institutions. Such job opportunities include internal auditing, business manager, industrial accounting, tax accounting, credit management, and budgeting. Some graduates choose to continue toward an advanced degree in accounting or a Master of Business Administration. Some continue toward a doctorate degree in accounting. This training prepares them for teaching careers in areas of accounting specialization. Several students continue on to law school.
