Environmental engineering aims to ensure that the societal development and the use of environmental resources (e.g., water, land, and air) are sustainable. This goal can be achieved by minimizing the environmental pollution and degradation. Therefore, environmental engineers study basic engineering principles (i.e., mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics), ecosystem processes, fate and transport of organic contaminants, water and wastewater treatment, air quality control technologies, alternative energy technologies, principles of sustainability to attenuate, control or solve water, soil, air pollution, and climate change problems in a manner which is compatible with social, economic, and political concerns.
