In the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology program, you work with biochemical processes. You gain basic knowledge about the chemistry behind the energy metabolism of living organisms, and you learn how to translate this knowledge into practical application in society and companies. For example, you may work with the development of new foods, the purification and utilization of wastewater, medicine and biofuels.

The education includes subjects such as biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, cell biology, mathematics and statistics, as well as a number of basic engineering courses where you learn to design and control biological processes.

If you are interested in chemistry and biology, you like working in laboratories, and you would like to use your basic scientific knowledge to solve real problems, then the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is probably for you.

What are you learning? As a Bachelor of Science in Engineering student, you learn to control and optimize the biotechnology process. You learn to work professionally in laboratories, and you learn to scale up the processes in larger industrial plants.

Maybe you brew beer, investigate possible alternatives to antibiotics, design a fermentation process, or work on turning sewage sludge into fuel.

During the 3½ years of the program, you will gradually build your theoretical knowledge within biotechnology and be introduced to real-world issues. In this way, you will develop a good understanding of the framework conditions and innovation needs of the biotechnology industry alongside your theoretical engineering skills.

The Bachelor of Engineering degree program in Biotechnology also includes a one-semester internship (5th semester), which may be paid.

An important part of the Bachelor of Engineering degree is about your personal development. You must learn to think and work like an engineer – to get ideas, collaborate with others, manage projects, think critically and take a holistic approach to the technologies you work with.

As a B.Sc. in Biotechnology, you can enter the job market directly. You can also apply to continue your studies as a M.Sc. (+2 years) if you have chosen certain courses during your education.
