Public health science is based on subjects from social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. In the program, you work with political, social, natural science and economic approaches to improving the health of populations and population groups in Denmark and globally.

The broad concept of health
In Public Health, you work with health within large population groups. You do not become a therapist or have patient contact, but you learn about health and the spread of disease within specific groups in society. You are given tools to analyze and assess how different health measures will work in the population and subsequently evaluate the effect a health measure has had.

During the program, you will learn to process large amounts of data, so it is an advantage if you have a good understanding of numbers and mathematics. You will also learn to communicate research results on, for example, health issues and to make them understandable to relevant target groups. You will learn theories about health behavior, the political system, health sociology and health economics. Quantitative and qualitative methods are included as central subjects in the program, and they are used, for example, for analyses of a population's life expectancy, growth and composition or for analysing the relationship between health behavior and risk of diseases.

Student life at Public Health Science
The teaching at Public Health Science consists of lectures, practice sessions, work in reading groups and independent reading. The assignments in the study must be completed individually or in groups, and here you can, for example, write about mental health, alcohol among young people, prevention of diabetes or obesity.

What can I become?
As a Bachelor's or Master's degree holder in Public Health, you can, for example, work with planning and implementing health promotion and disease prevention in the public sector (ministries, agencies, regions and municipalities), in NGOs or as a consultant in a company where you advise and carry out analyses on health and disease. You can read more about career opportunities as a Public Health scientist below or on our  Public Health graduate page, where you can read interviews with Public Health graduates.
