Do you want to design sustainable homes and help develop the materials that can create a green transition for the most climate-damaging industries? Construction is currently responsible for approximately 40% of the world's total CO2 emissions and is a massive consumer of natural resources.

In the Bachelor's degree program in Construction, you use your knowledge of physics and mathematics to design, project, test and construct sustainable construction that can ensure quality of life for everyone, and to develop construction technology and architecture with the latest methods and digital tools, including computer programming.

During the program, you will gain a thorough understanding and theoretical specialist knowledge in disciplines such as materials, statics, health and comfort in buildings, form and function, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and geotechnics, which together will enable you to understand and handle the many different challenging issues of construction on your own. You will gain deep insight into the technology and processes behind construction and learn to research and develop new sustainable solutions. Through the study, you will acquire digital skills, which are a prerequisite for modern construction.

The education constitutes the first 3 years of the 5-year civil engineering degree in Civil Engineering (cand.polyt.).

Specializations
During your bachelor's degree, you will increasingly specialize in the subject area that interests you most, and there is a great degree of freedom of choice, especially in the later semesters.

You can choose from four different elective packages:

  • Building construction, where you learn to design and project load-bearing structures for, for example, residential buildings, wind turbines and high-rise buildings
  • Infrastructure and Geotechnics, where you learn about construction work and soil conditions, such as excavations, basement structures, dams, bridges and tunnels
  • Innovative structural design, where you learn about load-bearing structures and the interaction between people and the built environment
  • Indoor Climate and Building Physics, where you learn to create sustainable buildings with a healthy indoor climate, including through technical design of, for example, climate control systems and installations.

Career opportunities
As a Civil Engineer, you can solve complex tasks with a holistic approach that includes considerations for aesthetics, technology and economics, and will therefore be able to participate in many interdisciplinary contexts throughout the construction industry. You can work for consulting engineering firms, construction companies, real estate companies and the building materials industry, with many different tasks. You can choose to work as a specialist or generalist or as a project manager. You can also continue in the world of research and take a PhD.
